Wibaux, Montana (MT)          a perspective  of this ranching town

This town, the county seat of Wibaux County, was named after a, Pierre Wibaux, who came to eastern Montana, liked it, and stayed.  Wibaux became one of the largest cattlemen in the state of Montana.

Many ranchers lost their herds during the cattle-killing winter of 1866-67, but Wibaux was resilient, he found investment money, bought up the surviving livestock, and it is said, that by 1889, he had accumulated 40,000 to 75,000 head of cattle.  The number seems to vary considerable depending on the source of the information.

When you visit Wibaux, be sure to go to the Wibaux Museum.  The museum's focal point is the Pierre Wibaux House and Office which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Food and lodging is available.
